Greene County Connections: [Biographical sketch courtesy of Minerva Archer]. Jasper Adams [1833-1864] was the son of Abraham and Elizabeth Adams of Greene County, Pennsylvania. He was born in Pennsylvania before moving with his parents and siblings to Muskingum County, Ohio. He never married and had no children; he lived at home and worked the family farm with his father until he went to war. Jasper died as a prisoner of war in Andersonville prison in 1864. Following his death, both his parents applied for dependent pensions based on his financial support; however, their eligibility was hotly contested. Consequently, Jasper’s pension file contains a wealth of information for researchers, including original letters he wrote home, multiple sworn affidavits from many of his family members, as well as sworn affidavits from multiple neighbors in Muskingum County, as well as from friends and acquaintances who knew Abraham and Elizabeth in Pennsylvania. Abraham’s pension was denied. Elizabeth’s pension was granted only to be withdrawn; however, it appears to have been reinstated after some years. This pension file must be read closely and completely, noting that materials are not in chronological order, and that many affiants’ testimony is contradictory; some affiants even contradict themselves in earlier and later testimonies.

Greene County Connections: Robert Adams [1846-1914] was the son of Elijah Adams and Jane Buchanan. He married (1) Mary Robinson [1847-1877], a graduate of Waynesburg College, Class of 1868, and (2) Martha Paull Wells [1853-1935], a graduate of Waynesburg College, Class of 1871. Robert lost his right arm as the consequence of a gunshot wound at the Battle of Fredericksburg, on or about 13 December 1862. He is buried with his second wife at Arlington National Cemetery.

Greene County Connections: Samuel Adams [1843-1871] was the son of Elijah Adams and Harriet Buchanan. He was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania, before moving with his parents to Henry County, Illinois.
